DELL XPS 14 Ultrabook review

Dell XPS 14 is a premium ultrabook that can be seen with its design , features and its price too,  its price is Rs. 79990/- on dell’s India website.

DELL XPS 14 ultra book is 20.7mm thin and weight 2.13kg that is quite high as per other ultrabook available. Dell XPS 14 ’s lid has the grey aluminum finish, with the Dell logo in the middle. Dell has coated the base of the ultrabook with a silicon layer and has put a soft-painted magnesium alloy as palmrest near keyboard. Keys of this ultrabook have spreaded little that not looks good with the beauty of this product.

This ultra book is designed to deliver long battery life and powerful processors in an ultrathin form that’s constructed from the finest materials. It’s a design that goes beyond beauty.

This ultra book has 10 hours of battery life with a backlit keyboard. The keys are fairly flat and a bit slippery, but travel is decent, and the conventional layout makes for a reasonably satisfying touch-typing experience. The clickable touchpad is responsive–and pretty much in line. Dell XPS 14 boots up to 33% faster than a regular hard drive and resumes in less than 2 seconds because of a solid-state drive (SSD) and Intel Rapid Start Technology. This ultra book has 35.5cm (14) HD+ (900p) display with 400-nit brightness and performance class graphics (NVIDIA) and resolution 1600 x 900 pixel. Although Screen quality is complained in dell forums and reviews by customer’s that viewing angles are not good and having some reflection effect.

Dell  XPS 14 is fully loaded machine. This ultra book come with 3rd Gen Intel Core i5-3317U ivy dual core processors, Windows 7 premium (customize to professional) and  4GB DDR3(1600MHz) RAM. Its two cores run at a frequency of 1.7Ghz but can turbo up to 2.6Ghz when required. It has 500GB hard disk with 32GB mSATA SSD and Nvidia GT630 graphics. This laptop has Nvidia graphics chip, it comes with the technology called Optimus. This allows the laptop to switch between Intel HD 4000 graphics and Nvidia GT 630, depending on the workload. For example, during gaming GT 630 came in picture while web browsing or media playback is handled by HD 4000. This helps maximizing the battery life.

Dell XPS 14 has ample ports, on the left side there are two USB 3.0 ports (backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports), one HDMI out port, one mini display port ( no standard VGA port) and one Ethernet port. On the right there is a headphone jack and 3-1 card reader with a slot for security cable but it lacks an optical drive. The Dell XPS 14 also supports dual-band (2.4GHz/5GHz) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The screen measures 14 inches diagonally. It has a resolution of 1600×900 pixels that is better than 1366 X 768 resolutions that are coming in many laptops and ultrabooks. The 3317U processor is a very fast processor and easily handled the typical workload involving web browsing, creating office documents or playing a HD 3D game over it.

With Waves MaxxAudio technology it contributes to the full-bodied audio from two built-in 2-watt stereo speakers, and the high-def (1.3-megapixel) webcam captures smooth video for Skype calls and YouTube clips with an added quality.
