Facebook ask Samsung to create Facebook phone

Everybody knows Facebook has been on a mission to take over the world. You may also know that due to the failures of the HTC ChaCha and the most recent HTC First, their plans are not exactly going according to plan. Not to be dissuaded the social networking giant is attempting to rope Samsung into a deal.

To set the scene for you, the HTC First was discounted from $99.99 to a staggering $0.99 on contract soon after launch. People assumed it was because the device wasn’t selling well and sure enough, its entire launch in the UK was put off indefinitely. It’s hardly surprising. What benefit would consumers gain from a Facebook phone? People enjoy playing bingo on ballsupbingo.com, but that doesn’t mean they want their entire interface to revolve around the game, no matter how often they play it.

Mark Zuckerberg doesn’t seem to have taken the issue to heart. On a recent visit to South Korea, he met with Samsung executives to discuss the idea of a ‘Facebook-friendly’ Samsung phone. According to an anonymous watcher, “Facebook has every intention of becoming the second Google, and with that intent in mind, Zuckerberg is said to have asked Samsung to step up cooperation by launching a phone with a Facebook interface.”

Good idea? Probably not. It looks like Samsung may think so too because they reportedly don’t want to associate themselves with the Facebook brand, seeing no way it would provide them any benefit to create the device.

“Samsung doesn’t want to help nurture a second Google, which is now becoming a formidable rival for Samsung in the handset business.”

Personally we think there’s no need for a smartphone dedicated to Facebook, and if the two phones which have failed already are anything to go by, consumers also see no value. We’ll have to see if Zuckerberg and co continue on with this futile effort though.

Would you buy a Facebook phone?
