Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 review, feature and price in India

Samsung Galaxy Y

If you are planning to buy a low budget smart phone in android OS than Samsung Galaxy Y could be your good option.

In Samsung Galaxy Y, ‘Y’ stands for young it means it is a phone for young generation. Samsung Galaxy Y has become a most viewed and searched phone in internet due to its low budget price tag and it is a Samsung brand. For those who want to buy an android phone for a long time and could not have bought it due to high price of android phones, Samsung made it easy to them.

Samsung Galaxy Y – Overview

Thanks to Samsung who made it possible to buy a high featured android smart phone in the range of below Rs. 10k slab which is an economy budget range for average mobile users, mostly for students and teenagers.

The Samsung Galaxy Y is a small, compact, lightweight (97.5g) and a 3.0-inch screen mobile; its rounded edges give it a very sober look. On the front, we just have a proximity sensor, but no front facing camera or an ambient light sensor. Samsung Galaxy Y is a quad band GSM phone that means it can be used anywhere in the world.

Samsung has bundled the latest Android 2.3.5 along with a stripped down version of Touchwiz UI. Swiping through home screens and apps is quick and relatively fluid with very little to no lag.

Samsung Galaxy Y- Features

Galaxy S runs over Android 2.3.5 OS with 830MHz ARMv6 processor and 290MB user available RAM powered by a 1200mAh battery.

It is having an internal memory of 160MB and support micro –SD card upto 32GB that is plus point otherwise low internal memory is a disappointment for a smartphone. Samsung Galaxy Y having 3” 256K-color QVGA TFT capacitive touchscreen.  It is a Quad-Band GSM and dual-band 3G support phone. Other features are –

  • 2MP fixed-focus camera with geotagging
  • GPS receiver with A-GPS
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • 3.5mm audio jack
  • Document viewer
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • Swype text input
  • MicroUSB port (charging) and stereo Bluetooth 3.0
  • Social network integration

The music player is borrowed from their other phones like the Galaxy S and S II and features 5.1 channel audio enhancements. It sounds best when used with a good pair of in-earphones like the EP630s.

Samsung Galaxy Y comes with Quickoffice so that you can view and edit Word, Excel, Powerpoint; you can also view PDF files.

As with all Android devices the Samsung Galaxy Y comes with Google Maps pre-loaded and it is really the only map solution you need. The small screen size can make it hard to view the directions on screen while driving, but it’s not bad for a budget phone.

There aren’t too many miscellaneous apps other than the stock ones that come with Gingerbread. You get a voice recorder and a task manager, Samsung have also bundled their SocialHub app for Facebook and Twitter access.

Samsung Galaxy Y- Build

Samsung Galaxy Y is a 3” touchscreen phone, with multi touch support. It feels good in your hands; its rounded corner made this a good looking phone.

Below the display, there is a single hardware button, the central Home key with two capacitive controls either side -Menu and Back. It’s the standard Samsung layout. The Home button is set within its own frame, slightly recessed. It has a nice feel to it thanks to the brushed-texture finish.

The backlighting of the capacitive Menu and Back keys comes on only upon a press. When not used, they’re invisible, creating the illusion that there’s a single button on the phone. There’s no haptic feedback for either the screen or the capacitive keys.

Samsung Galaxy Y – Camera

There is just the one camera on the Samsung Galaxy Y; it is a rear-facing 2MP snapper capable of capturing images up to 1600 x 1200. There is no front camera; there is no flash, no tap to focus and no auto-focus.

As you would expect from a low-end mobile, the camera function is basic with only a few options to choose from. The camera app takes just over one second to open while shutter speed is sluggish with a one to two second delay between shots. A 2x digital zoom is present if you need to get closer to your subject, but resolution deteriorates the more you zoom.

Samsung Galaxy Y – Battery

The 1200 mAh Li-Ion battery is quoted at 850h/540h stand-by (2G/3G respectively) and 17h/6h of talk time. Our unit did quite well actually – one benefit of the small, low-res screen is that it isn’t a battery hog. Even at the busiest of testing, the Galaxy Y easily stuck out 2 days on continuous 3G and Wi-Fi connection.

Connectivity

Connectivity wise the Samsung Galaxy Y covers all the main bases which is impressive for a low-end phone; with Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, A-GPS, Bluetooth 3.0 and a microUSB port all on board. It will even let you use it as a wireless hotspot, allowing you to use the phone network to browse the web on a laptop or another Wi-Fi enabled device.

Samsung’s own desktop software Kies allows you to easily pull information on and off the Galaxy Y and the update to version 2.0 of the software has seen it become more stable and relatively user friendly. Kies allows you to easily see what content is on your phone and computer and transfer between the two without fuss.
